Some people are looking at the paintings and thinking "Oh, my toddler could do that; therefore it`s not REALLY art." Well, I`ve played one of Bach`s minuets. Does that mean it isn`t art anymore?

I don`t think it`s about whether or not you or your three-year-old is capable of drawing/painting something similar as much as it`s about the artist expressing themselves and leaving some kind of impression on the viewer. Appearantly, they`ve done their job there because look--you`re talking about it.

Obviously different people are going to see it different ways and have different opinions about it. Some will like it while others won`t. I, for one, don`t particularly care for most of those paintings, but hey, that`s just MY opinion.

I agree, it doesn`t take talent to create on of those but someone please define the word "art." Is it not ones expression of how they feel or how they see things? Leave them alone.

Pablo Picasso said it best: "All art is magic."
I think what gets people so upset about "modern art" is the initial simplicity of it. You could put this thinking to just about anything- a song, a book, an invention. What do people usually say? "Well, I could of done that!" But, see, you didn`t....Yes, some of the art can be almost ridicolous at times, like the "artist", who encased an visiably rotting, decomposing shark in formaldehyde and sold it for a million dollars. Art should be created from the heart and the soul, but Andy Warhol once said that;
"Making money is art and working is art and good business is the best art".

That may not be art, but the guys who made and sold it definately are artists.. It takes a good conman to call crap gold and get away with it and make a profit, and i think we can agree a good con is art.

I agree about places like the Tate Modern. Some modern and contemporary art is enjoyable, but when it`s stuff like a huge canvas with a blue circle at the bottom left corner and it sells for thousands, I dont like that. But the modern art I detest is the stuff like in Tate Modern, ie a pile of bricks with a fried egg on top, and people stand around discussing the meaning in it, its stupid. One piece of "art" in London was a clear bag containing garbage, resting against the leg of an empty table... the cleaning woman threw the bag away (true story), but the artist said he could "recreate" it. I miss real Art.

He doesn`t just "kind of" have a point, he`s right on the money. Modern art is such retarded BS. Try heading to Tate Modern to waste an afternoon after touring Europe`s "other" galleries like oh, the Louvre, and see what kind of sense of wonder (read: nausea) it fills you with. Classic artists had magnificent talent. "Modern" art is a retard-fest.

Oh and if you do decide to take my advice, you can leave Tate Modern as soon as you see the big spider thingie in the "lobby". You won`t miss anything. It`s the coolest thing in that hole.

Woa I totally thought I was the only one who thought like that about modern art. But thankfully there are others who have some sense. I will admit however that SOME madern art is good, but most of it is crap so...

^ Rock and roll isn`t popular where I liveso she`d be popular with 15 kids in my town. But we`re not dumb enough to say Sh*tney is rock.
And I would have to know the stories behind the art to "get it".

Jtc970, Britney Spears is not rock and roll. She`s just pretending to be so she can be popular with teens.

Understanding modern art, mean you have to understand the fundamentals of art and design themselves. If you don`t know or you don`t understand that then yes, you will say that it is crap.

On `Souzon`

"I like to think it represents the artist shining brightly upon his audience, inviting their praise and admiration, whilst stealing the light from those that pay for his overly-pretentious musings therefore funding his existance and promoting the growth of his art further and further up his own arse. Dragging his audience along with him, letting them bask in the warmth of his fame and wonder at the size of the price tag, forever deflecting them away from the fact that the actual piece of art is actually a piece of s***."

i couldn`t agree more

^^^"my 3 year old could do better" sounds like a pretty valid argument to me, because a 3 year old can spill ink on paper and come up with a more intriguing design that half of those "paintings." could a 3 year old have painted the last supper or laocoon? not too fu.cking likely.

That was more retarded than anything. Yea that modern art sucks that doesn`t mean all modern art sucks. That was only like what 10 pictures in the whole last century you need to get a little more real than that. Anything is considered art even a two ear olds scribbles, that doesn`t mean its anything good though.

^^ Exactly.
Guess what? Your three-year-old DIDN`T do better, so your comment is pointless.
Someone tried to tell me once that Jimmy Page wasn`t a very good guitar player, because he (the guy that was arguing with me) could play Stairway to Heaven on guitar - that it wasn`t that hard.
I replied, "who cares if you can play it, did you WRITE it? Did you make it become one of the most recognized songs in rock music? No."
Wanker.

I liked a lot of those.

I don`t know. Whatever. I hate arrogant artists, but I hate "cynnical" laypeople who think they have the capacity to criticize even more. "AHURHURHURHURRRR, MY THREE-YEAR-OLD COULD DO BETTER!!!11!!1!!!"

Think about how stupid that sounds for a second.

i dont agree just because the specific paintings he chose to say were "crap" wernt that riveting doesnt mean he should generalise. People who see all modern art as crap or boring are shallow minded fools! FOOLS! hehe someone please post an image of some other modern art plz. Although some of the stuff in the tate modern is just silly....pile of bricks? eh?????

don`t agree at all. jackson pollock is a god. just ask the stone roses. I quite liked a couple of them. Plus you often have to see the paintings at full size in a gallery to understand them. But be philistines. see if I care.

I dont see how David Hockney is crap. Most regular people have a hard time making purple out of red and blue. Let alone understanding basic rules of design and color theory. He at least has that down.

Art is indeed what you make of it, and while we are here mocking it there are people buying it for their galleries, for their walls, because they like it. But this raises the question. Why do people get vast amounts of money for doing something anyone could do? No-one else can do my job the way I do it, that`s why it`s my job, but I don`t get millions for my uniqueness! Also, sometimes art goes too far. It`s one thing painting random stripes, but an artist once filled a bag full of rubbish and it was displayed as art. A cleaner mistook it for real rubbish and binned it. So the artist went home, threw some more rubbish in a bag, and sent that in, while claiming compensation!

The art -was- pretty crap and so funny in a way, but I found the comments people made very unamusing. "Hey this is crap." "Hey I agree with you, it`s crap."

I dunno, I just find conversations where everyone agrees with each other kinda boring.

no reason to pick on modern art. For every rembrandt, va gogh, or Monet there are hundreds of artists who weren`t that good. Same goes for Modern Art

For someone who is mocking modern art, he picked out several peices that made me stop, take a real good look and think: "Profile of Light", "Untitled (#18)", and "Chairman of the Board". Oh well, I guess art is all in your interpertation.

If somebody created it, it`s art. Whether it`s good or not is left up to the viewer. The fact that you could splash paint on a canvas doesn`t make you Jackson Pollock. The point isn`t that you COULD create the art, the point is that you didn`t, and someone else did.

If you go to Tate Modern in London, it`s just rubbish! A glass of water on a shelf, some bricks stacked on the floor, a painting with nothing but a blue square on it and a wig. If I wanted to see this kind of stuff, I would have stayed home.

Any art can be crap, any art can be good, art is what you see, if it doesnt affect you move on to something else.
If someonle likes it they buy it, if no one likes it the artist starves.

Saying modern art is stupid is like saying red is a bad color.

The portrait "Blue Balls" was painted by a chimpanzee named Sam, which is pretty neat for a primate. I am curious on why its called "Blue Balls 4", did he paint it with his testicles?

I actually like some modern art pieces but I hate the indulgence of the artist themselves. I think the creative process goes alittle like this...

"um, okay. ill paint a red line here...paint a blue square up here...and i geuss thats it, time to make a few thousand and pretend theres actually some intellect or emotion behind the canvas...."

I have to admit, I do like modern art. But I do agree with him to an extent. Just because something is deemed "art" does not make it worthy of praise. In my opinion, something like Fragonard`s "The Swing," took more artistic talent than that freakin` "Profile of Light."
