I can`t believe how many people are saying, "Look at the standards today compared to this." Now that we know what cigarettes do it is unacceptable to show this. The commercials that we show today would be highly unacceptable back when this was aired. There are so many sexual innuendos today in commercials you can`t watch any station without seeing one. This isn`t half as bad compared to what we see on TV today.

as for why intelligent people smoke, i started smoking at about 15 years old, coz of peer pressure being cool whatever... what happens is you get a physical and physcological addiction to nicotine. and even if you are athletically inclined smoking will eventually take its toll.
i smoked for 20 years before giving them up for good.

trust me it is rEALLY HARD to quit.
i regret smoking for so long now and take every free moment to exercise, eat well, and get outdoors.

you realy should get some of the OLD cartoons you would be shocked to see some of the things that went on, not just smoking : superman and his war time antics, popeye smokes all the time over half his cartoons cant be shown today, bugs bunny and the racism (when cartoon network did the "junebugs" thing to show all the bugs bunny cartoons they had to leave out something around 150 cartoons due to to the things shown that would get you sued today.

hell when was the last time any one has seen a "Heckel & Jeckel" cartoon?? (for those of you who dont know that was the two crows who walked with a hop)

It`s not fake. I knew about this, and apparently the company that made the Flintstones did not make this, in fact, they didn`t know about it until it was aired!!!

i can understand this ad back in the 60`s, as it has already been noted, at that time they were not noted to cause any health problems, knowing what we do not, i cannot understand why so many people still smoke. i know very intellegent people, who have great plans for their lives, ye still smoke a pack + every day. i cannot see the intellegence in this. why spend so much money? thats alone would keep me from smoking. then there ate the proven health effects that are experienced by smokers. IMO smokers cannot cope with reality, and thus need an outlet. i say do something productive with yourself, instead of slowly killing youself and those around you.

there used to be old tv ads that ended with sayings like "3 out of 5 doctors prefer/smoke "brand x" cigarettes

freakyppl, I agree completely. I always said that they should give people a year to quit, and if they didn`t do it, mass execute anyone who didn`t. And that includes half my family. I am harshly against smoking.

Wow, and I thought product placement was bad in todays shows.
While on the topic, I recently saw an old "Victor Borge" (a piano comedian) show from the 50`s and every second scetch he did was about the car that sponsored the show (think it was a pontiac). No way viewers today would put up with that amount of advertising.

zzzchubby, Winston Cigarettes was the Flinstone`s primary sponsor in the 50`s. Their entire first season was bankrolled by them and furthermore, that commecial was supposedly shown after every episode. Why is it so "hi-res?" Simple. The animators were lazy and cheap. Instead of painting a new Flinstones-esque cel of a Winston Cigarette package, they used a stock drawing of one and didn`t bother to animate it at all. That sort of faux-animation was the norm for animated films back then. Just take a look at any instructional video from that era and you`ll see the same exact thing.

I still don`t understand why this is so unbelievable.

The Simpsons parodied the old times of yore for cartoon advertisment with Itchy and Scratchy. They had comments when advertising ciggs like "I don`t know what`s in it, but it sure feels good!"

Why is it so hard for people to believe it`s real? That sort of advertising is incredibly commonplace for the time period. That sort of thing along with incredibly sexist imagery and glaring racist stereotypes. I mean -- "Rupert Goes to Coon Island," anyone?

As for cigarettes, specifcially, back in the Victorian era (I believe) they had "asthmatic cigars," which were cigars you were supposed to smoke to help cure asthma.

People were stupid. See why science and social progress are good?

You also have to remember when the Flintstones first came on it was during prime time, and a large chunk of their audience were adults.

Lucky Strikes used to have an add that featured a doctor talking about how wholesome the cigarettes were . . . and how he liked to have a smoke in the car, at the office (doctor`s office!) and at home.

All sorts of things were off in the good `ol days.

Yeah, today it would be wrong to do so, but back when that commercial was made, nobody knew about the health risks that cigarettes caused.
