    that wasn`t very accurate

they seemed to have based who is "smart" on the amount of money they spend per student or teacher. that only means they`re spending a lot of money, not that they`re smarter.

The stats are from Morgan Quitno and are published every year - the stats take in far more than money spent per child - it`s also about how they achieve.

Noing Noing has simply looked at how each state in Morgan Quitno`s rankings voted at the last election. So that stats are perfectly okay, but obviously there are plenty of Republicans who are more intelligent than some Democrats and vice versa.

    ^^^^

Actually, it is pretty much the determining factor for who is "smart" or "stupid". They take into account proficiency but they weigh money spent per student and spent per teacher far, far too heavily to have an accurate study.

Actually Morgan Quinto they say they`ve concentrated far less on what was spent per pupil, and are looking more at student achievments.

It`s not the Morgan Quitno stats that are in question. What`s f*cked up about this is the correlating of the stats to a truly stupid, mega leap conclusion such as this.

Each state is divided into many urban and rural subdivisions. Wealthy areas and poor areas. Many different ethnic backgrounds. Making convenient leaps in logic like this web are rediculous and dangerous.

REAL election stats showed an increase in the Jewish vote for Bush, for example. I guess that means that Jews are "dumber" as well, since we now know that dumber people voted for Bush based on this conclusion.

Does this now mean that Jew haters can use these statistics to prove how stupid Jew are?

I hope this whole thing was a joke.

*cough* Whether Republicans are "smarter" than Democrats or not doesn`t matter. As long as either side can base their views on something substantial be it moral in their eyes or otherwise, it`s all good to argue about. :D

Michaelcsr: It depends where in Virgnia you lived. For the most part, the state is Republican and conservative in the south, and the Northern area in the DC Metro vicinity are Democrats. Just look at a bunch of studies and you`ll see that the schools in NoVa are ranked nationally.

More spending on schools is not necessarily a good thing. Also, what does the "personal attention from teachers" part mean? I bet that if someone made a similar list and based it only on test scores, college attendance, grade point averages; you know, stuff that actually means something; you would see a lot more red on the top than blue. I think the criteria selection is very telling.

"And yet, higher educated people tend to vote Republican. Go figure."

Thats actually grossly inaccurate. I`m not sure about the validity of this survey, but I do know of many others that clearly show a correlation between political preference and college success. Its because colleges (well good ones anyway) teach critical thinking skills and thus college educated people tend not to rely on opinions, but facts, clearly giving liberals the advantage.

contrary to conservative propoganda, politics are not taught in classes that are not politically oriented. Thus, the idea that liberal professors are politically influencing students is just another example of conservatives illogically trying to explain a damaging statistic, there a natural correlation between intelligence and liberalism.

PS. "thinking on your own" isn`t the same as critical thinking. Its like your a$$ and a hole in the ground, they`re different.

It`s the holier than thou attitude that the kids from Ohio (that play doctor with each other and call it "Med-School") project onto others that turn away swing voters. KnightmareOH, have you ever actually gone to college? Because it is absurd to believe that politics aren`t discussed outside of political classes. And even if politics aren`t discussed in class teachers manage to display their political opinions via posters/flyers outside of their offices. And look how so many people here are so ready to accept that conservatives are less intelligent than liberals; do you honestly believe that professors are free from the biases that many people here possess? This is not to say that all liberal professors are close-minded, but they are humans and are just as likely to have biases as everybody else.

I am currently IN college, and let me tell you that professors hardly ever influence anyone`s political views. Most kids who come into college (at least in a decent college) already have the ability to form their own political opinions. Sure, most professors are liberal, as almost all academics have been in the history of academia. This often leads to a good debate in class, but it`s hardly "liberal propaganda" as so many conservatives like to label it. And even though I am liberal, I`ve met many extremely intelligent conservatives. The state rankings are more of a gauge of the performance of school systems, rather than the intelligence of individuals.

Did you ever take into consideration that because your Liberal you don`t see it? I`m not jumping on you because I believe that you honestly see it that way, but when you are Conservative and your amongst Liberal professors you would understand the bias we feel. Ward Churchill and Nicholas De Genova are two Liberal professors that recently came under fire for spewing their Liberalism to far and offending people. You can`t even think of one such Conservative professor, can you?

All right, I`ll concede that it does happen in rare cases, but I just don`t think it`s a good enough reason to indict the whole system, as so many people are keen on doing. We have arguably the best higher education system in the world. But to return to the main point, I reject the validity of these rankings.

I’m not saying people don`t have biases courtbebe or that politics don`t play a part in college. If you read my post, you will realize what I said was that professors don`t discuss politics in class. And through that I was debunking an outright conservative lie that the liberalization of college and college students came from professor biases, instead of most college student’s ability to think critically.

Think about it, conservative dogma preaches history is the bible, ethnocentrism is true moral compass, logic doesn`t apply to argument, and the way things were done many years ago, are the way things should be done today. Do you actually think that someone who learned to take the facts, not opinion, and use those as a guide to truth might hold these dogmatic statements as universal constants? Course not.

BSR, do you have any kind of life at all? Seriously...fact it, college professors are more liberal. They`re trying to mold minds to save the country from what Bush has done to it. Unfortunately, non-nice individuals like you with nothing better to do but blow their views out their asses keep steering people in the wrong direction, brainwashing young idiots into believing your views are correct just because you say they are and give some pooty excuse for proof, causing them to elect morons into office who slowly throw the country down the drain.
