hey, cajnkitty69, i hope you don`t teach english. you have three grammatical miscues in your post.
it should read:
"I am a teacher as well, and I do not in any way blame the internet for students` LAZINESS."

I`m actually quite grateful not to be a teacher in this particular era. Especially in the US.

Is dog_or_man PMS-ing over internet language...dang, I wish I had that much time.

Internet isn`t killing good writing, just like Microsoft Paint isn`t killing art. Putting "And so U C" should not make you blame the internet, it should make you blame poor writing skills from the students. Sure, the internet might reinforce it, but abreviation started a good while ago. Just tell `em to shut up if the give you any more lip about marking off, you`re the teach.

I think the counter-arguments to my missive are, for the most part, points well taken -- but I can`t agree that the internet provides "a place to practice the skill." It would seem to me to provide, rather, a place without any negative reinforcement when it`s done badly. Doing something over and over again only counts as practice if one gets better at it in the process. The internet, by contrast, provides a place in which everyone can write terribly and nobody gets punished for it, so instead they just keep getting worse.

"even if that drummer thinks the sphincter is candy." hahahahaha.

dog_or_man: writing something on the internet does not constitute being published. if so, then i get to add to my resume every time i post on i-am-bored

I thought it was cute, not bad writing. Not as funny as the writer may have intended, but it was well-written (considering the topic).

Including internet slang, or any slang, in a term paper is, other than extremely stupid at pretty much any age, a comepletely different issue.

But... how is the internet killing good writing? It provides a place to practice the skill and get feedback on one`s writing without a formal situation. While this may encourage bad writers to take the bait, it also encourages the talented writers... maybe some of which you are too lazy to seek out.

dog_or_man, would you also suggest that those with inferior education and/or vocabulary not speak?
Also, if your students write such things as "And so U C" in their papers, don`t blame it on the internet. Blame it on their own stupidity. An honors student won`t write in such a manner. That`s why s/he is an honor student. Any student who would include internet slang in a term paper was already predisposed to being stupid before the internet came along.

I just know I`m going to get the stuffing beaten out of me for saying this -- just like I did the last time -- but the internet is *KILLING* good writing. People`s inability to sit still long enough to compose decent, well-metered, articulate prose is suddenly no barrier to seeing themselves published, with the predictable result that the bar has been lowered for everyone. I`m a teacher, and I have twenty year-old students who complain over my head to my bosses when I mark them down for putting things like "And so U C" in their term papers.

All that could have been said in two sentences. The humor is lost by having to read such a long redundant piece of garbage. And no, I haven`t had my morning coffee yet.
