For God`s sake he was trying to do a nice thing and people are arguing about it, jeeze can`t we all just feel a little warm in fuzzy inside that he was trying to be a good person?

OK, people overanalyze things. In the East River, I doubt it`d survive long anyway! And good for that guy, freeing a fish and all

lol that was humorus, i think that humor was he whole point of the page. i dont think that he did it to b nice, and im sure that he did not care if it wiped out an ecosystem. i know that i laughed, and i could really care less if the fish died, or if it spwaned, or if it assassinated Al Gore, point is it was posted to cause laughter. it achived that for most pple,(except ppl who have their heads up their rear, and think that they have to display their "college knowledge`) loved the post, need more! 8-)

goddessdyane: I totally agree with that too, except I was getting the impression this was done more as a stunt and less because the guy genuinely had a good heart. I`d prefer it if I was wrong though.

He tried to do a good thing. Whether or not it was harmful, this guy proves that people are still basically good. He may not have done everything right, but he`s on the right path, unlike those who criticize him while sitting on their fat asses.

I`ve thought some more about this and I agree 100% with anglatay. This was a really ignorant stunt (and, basically killed the fish painfully, if the freshwater/saltwater thing is true).

awwe....ive always wanted to do that but (i duno if this is true) whats if say, it was a freshwater fish put into saltwater that would be hell for the little guy.

Didn`t you read what he said? He regularly visited that fish. No-one wanted it. I thought his comments about Erin were funny...

Sigh...it`s too bad that what started with good intentions turned negative but the arguments are quite understandable.

P.S. I`m all for leaving the fish alone and eating people instead.

"So in general: don`t set non-native species free just anywhere, it`s crule to keep a fish that size in such a small tank, and if animals weren`t for eating, why are they made of meat?"

)-| You realize humans are made of "meat" too, right? Are you a cannibal, then?

I think there are worse things that enter the water than a carp. Remember, he was in NYC.

I wish some one ccould buy me out of my fish tank. Few good people have enough money though. They keep me there not for eating but, for work. I don`t just sit there I have to run around and do poo. SOMEONE PLEASE SET ME FREE!!!!!!!

Snufkin..

You don`t know if he was really in trouble before. It was probably added in for comic effect. I really doubt that he could fool the EPA into not scrolling and and reading the rest. I doubt the EPA read half of it, stopped at the "there was no fish!" and went onto a different subject.

The thought was to release the fish. It symbolized freedom and how we`re all kind of stuck in a place wayy to small for us. Whether or not he meant to have that in there, it still was.

I agree with your last paragraph.

25seconds asked: "Who`s to say it`s a female fish anyways?"

::flips a coin::

Heads says it`s female. It`s less likely to be pregnant, but it`s the principle that matters here. Moreover, this guy`s "been in trouble" with the EPA before, so he knew what he was doing.

Long story short, he spent $40 to take a (freshwater?) fish, drag it around town in a box, dump into saltwater from 20 feet in the air, and then brag about his heroic feat online. The "thought and idea behind it?" There clearly wasn`t much thought involved here.

In the best possible scenario, he saved the fish`s life, and the fish market will buy two more to replace it. Far more likely the fish died. In a highly unlikely but possible scenario, he`s caused minor ecosystem damage. Go juvenile stupidity.

Some of those people need to get off of their high-horse. Who`s to say it`s a female fish anyways? I really doubt that there`s going to be some sort of apocalyptic event in response to this. It probably died shortly after it`s release.

Beyond that, though, it`s the thought and idea behind it. Freedom.

Whether it died or not, it doesn`t matter. This was for entertainment purposes and that`s it. Argue all you want. It doesn`t matter. And if I`m wrong and a month from now this causes something devestating, I`m deeply sorry. I doubt it`ll happen though.

Eh, ppl are stupid. It was a stupid dream, and a waste of $40 for a good eatin fish. It`s stupid to argue the impact of that one fish on it`s new environment. But the reality is, someone once did something similar with a Northern Snakehead:

http://www.dnr.state.md.us/fisheries/fishingreport/snakehead.html

So in general: don`t set non-native species free just anywhere, it`s crule to keep a fish that size in such a small tank, and if animals weren`t for eating, why are they made of meat?

That fish is a Carp, a species that has been living in New York since it was introduced by the Chinese in 1831. It was probably pulled from the same river only a few days earlier. So guess what, its not going to do any damage.

no..i wasnt being sarcartic..ecosystems are very fragile...im not a very sarcastic person. I agree 100% with you anglatay, good buddy. Thats a big 10-4

It only takes ONE member of a species to repopulate an entire area, namely a pregnant female. She lays the eggs, they hatch, grow and interbreed. Unlike humans (and like some humans, at that) the fish aren`t smart enough to tell the difference and NOT breed with their mother, or their sister. It happens more often than you think. Ducks fly from lake to lake with fish eggs on their feet, that`s another way it happens.
So. Go ahead and think of it in metaphorical way; for every fish that guy buys and sets free, the Chinese market is going to go catch another to replace it, and it will be bought by someone who actually means to eat it. I think I`m going to get out of here before I get accused of attacking you.... when in reality I was just defending myself and my statement.

You know what? You caught me on a bad day. And I just love when someone argues with me over something that I have spent my Entire College Career studying and happen to know a lot about. Especially on a message board, it`s always so fun when they do that where everyone can see. So before you (duh) someone the next time, maybe you better do a little more research than googling the wrong term and reading the info you get on the first result. For starters, though I doubt this guy or you being a 13-17 person excels in taxonomy, he called it a "Buffalo fish" not a "Buffalo carp", and if you look up the "Buffalo fish" you find that yes, it is native to the US. However, it hails from the Mississippi Valley, which I do believe is quite a distance from the Erie River, therefore making it an exotic species. (next post, out of room)

And calm down not like one fish could cause alot of harm...unless...it finds others of it`s species and mates. And that fish probably died anyway as a FREE fish.

Umm... isn`t that illegal?

Exotic species can`t take over without having a mate(duh). The point of the story is to make us think, ok? Look at it in a metaphorical way instead of literal. The literal act of freeing a buffalo carp (which, by the way, IS native to the USA) will not harm the East River anymore than it already has been, but the amount of people who have read this and for one instant were reminded of their freedom... and smiled... that is the good that this man has done.

I`m not sure if that`s sarcasm or honesty...if it`s honesty, thanks, if it`s sarcasm all I can say is that it`s true, they really are the number one native species killers.

The EPA should`ve had him arrested the last time he "was in trouble with them" as he put it. Introduced exotic species are the number one reason why native species go extinct. He thinks he`s saved the life of that one fish, but in reality he`s killed an entire school of some other fish.
