Link: Prarie Dogs Can Talk - What would happen if we discovered another intelligent species? According to Con Slobodchikoff, we already have.

    Hmmm.

I don`t know if I buy into the whole thing. They didn`t give any evidence to how they recognize people and their characteristics.

... )-| Prarie Dogs, Aqausixio. And yes, they were. It`s a rather strange painting.

As for the link... Clearly it`s fake. :-) It`d be really cool if they could, though.

It`s real. I went to the Northern Arizona U website, did some digging in the Biology Dept, Found Constatine Slobodichkoff. It`s a true story. Not totally unbelieveable, think dolphins.

thanks for the link, mazztek. hmmm... yes, a Ph.D. from Berkeley is certainly nothing to take lightly... whether or not the scientific evidence is sound, i am really just surprised at how quick most people are to dismiss the possibility that we may not be the only advanced species on this planet capable of complex language structures, societies, etc... oh well...

don`t think it`s odd at all.. of course other animals have languages and are intelligent. They don`t go around being stupid only following coincidences and their nature... If people think that, they`re just scared..

    I think it`s perfectly reasonable.
Even bees have a `language` of their own, when they discover a new source of pollen they come back and does a little dance that indicated the location, the amount of pollen and even the direction of the sun.
I think how they discovered if the prarie dogs can distinguish them is they present different and same types of people or things, then see if the sounds they make are different.
For example if they made the same sound everytime they saw a snake and not when they see a human, i think you can tell.
And they did an experiement like that with monkeys i think. they recorded the sound a monkey made when it saw a snake then they played it in the wild. immediately all the monkeys stood up to look for the snake. They also had different reactions when they played different sound.
I think animals are very smart, if not smarter then us. =)

This leaves an incredible amount of information out and does not back up the hypothesis. This is totally irrelevant and in a way blank. I believe it, but this theory needs a lot of backing up. Anyway, prarie dogs aren`t the first animal to be hypothesised(or proven) to be able to speak. Japanese Snow Monkeys(yamazaru) were sent to Texas and were tested. They developed a screech for a rattle snake that when it was played to monkeys in Japan, they weren`t phased by it. But when the recording of the monkeys screeching about the snake was played to the same group of monkeys who developed it, they immediately took defensive procedures.

I`m sorry if anyone misunderstood why I dismissed the site. It wasn`t because I believe they can`t be intelligent or speak, it`s because the site the link was on is not a trustworthy one. :-)

Since it is true, or at least speculated to be, that`s really cool! :-D
